Brandon Little 12th Combat Aviation Brigade Public Affairs Office ANSBACH, Germany -- V Corps’ 12th Aviation Brigade marked its upcomingdeployment to Iraq with a ceremony at Katterbach Army Airfield here May 24.About 600 Soldiers from the 12thCAB participated in the ceremony. “I would like to say a specialthank-you to the all the Soldiers,Families, and friends (here today)for everything that you do,” saidCol. Timothy J. Edens, the 12thCAB commander. “Each of you (istruly) a valued member of the 12thCombat Aviation Brigade.” Six veterans of the renowned World War II Band of Brothers -- Bill Guarnere, BuckCompton, Babe Heffron, Rod Bain, Frank Perconte and Don Malarkey -- along with afew of their Family members, also attended the event. Three of the actors from the  Band of Brothers television series joined them -- Michael Cudlitz (who plays BullRandelman), Jimmy Maddio (who portrays Frank Perconte) and Richard Speight (whoplays Skip Muck).During the ceremony, the colors for each company and battalion in the 12th, as wellas the brigade flag, were carefully rolled and then cased in their green canvascovers. The colors will remain cased until the brigade reaches its area of operationsin Iraq.Soldiers of the CAB have been preparing and training for their deployment in supportof Operation Iraqi Freedom for some time now.Last summer more than 600 Soldiers and families moved from other communities inGermany to help form the CAB's current unit structure of more than 3,800 personnelserving at units in Germany, Belgium and Italy.The unit is no stranger to deployment. In August, 1990, the brigade -- then the 12thAviation Brigade -- deployed with U.S. Army Europe's VII Corps in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. During the brief four-day coalitionground offensive, the brigade provided essential combat supplies and support as itspilots flew nearly 400 flight hours and transported more than 390 tons of cargo.The brigade returned to Iraq with V Corps in 2003, and later deployed to Afghanistanin 2005 with U.S. Army Europe's Southern European Task Force to support OperationEnduring Freedom. During the 12th’s last deployment, its air crews flew more than52,000 hours, transported 105,000 personnel and moved more than 25 millionpounds of cargo.   While in Afghanistan the brigade also took on a second major mission, aidingPakistan in conducting humanitarian relief efforts in the wake of a devastatingearthquake in the region.In August 2006 the 12th Aviation Brigade became the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.Regardless of the location or the mission, Edens said, the goal of the brigade hasalways been to return every member home safely to his Family. “Thank you for choosing to serve your nation as a Soldier … I am truly proud tostand with you and wear the cloth of our nation,” said Edens.
